Wait!? GPT-4 can pass the Turing Test? - Chum.Alum.World

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer,  a neural network machine learning model trained using internet data to generate any type of text. Developed by OpenAI, it requires a small amount of input text to generate large volumes of relevant and sophisticated machine-generated text. As you might know, OpenAI’s cofounder is Elon Musk and they are the leading platform for Generative AI models such as DALL·E 2 and Whisper  just to name a few

Currently, Generative AI Text models are based on the GPT-3 platform.  However, in the shadows, a small group of beta tester have access to the upcoming GPT-4 model and from what we can understand, the potential is exponentially mind-blowing.  Some are mentioning the historically quantifying Turing test as a doable obstacle. In fact the CEO Sam Altman of Open AI tweeted this not so cryptic meme:

Turing Test:

One thing is an external person’s anecdotal claim and another is the company’s CEO talking about the Turing test as if it were a kids’ game. This is interesting because of two reasons.

First, the Turing test has historical relevance—it’s a symbol of the limits of machine intelligence. No AI system can pass it reliably, although the most advanced would surely put up a fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if GPT-4 could pass it amply.

The second reason deflates the importance of the first: the Turing test is generally regarded as obsolete. In essence, it’s a test of deception (fooling a person) so an AI could theoretically pass it without possessing intelligence in the human sense. It’s also quite narrow, as it’s exclusively focused on the linguistic domain. Source: GPT-4 Rumors From Silicon Valley

Some might cringe when hearing the Turing test being mentioned due to its association with sentient A1.  In fact, this was the point of contention when Google “fired” their whistle blower who claimed they had successfully engineered a sentient A1.

Let’s keep our eyes on the development and unfurling of GPT-4.  The possibilities remain limitless as Generative AI models become more modulated in function and form.
